What it does
Mortgage REITs are the levered, publicly-traded end of the mortgage buyer universe — roughly $300-400B of mortgage AUM across the sector. This panel covers 15 flagship public mREITs sourced from their SEC 10-K/10-Q XBRL disclosures — aggregate balance-sheet composition at quarterly grain, with trend lines back to each filer’s first XBRL-tagged filing.
What’s in it:
- Overview directory — 15 flagship filers (agency residential, hybrid residential, and commercial categories) with total assets, stockholders’ equity, and implied leverage at the latest quarter.
- Per-filer drill-down — KPI strip (assets / equity / liabilities / leverage), asset-class composition from XBRL-tagged portfolio concepts, and historical trend of assets & equity.
- Quarterly grain — data refreshes after each earnings cycle (10-K annually, 10-Q three times a year).
Sample questions this answers in one click:
- “Which mREIT is most levered?”
- “Show BXMT’s commercial loan portfolio trajectory.”
- “How has Annaly’s balance sheet grown since 2015?”
- “Compare AGNC and NLY total assets quarter by quarter.”
- “What’s inside Starwood Property Trust?”
Who finds this useful: fixed-income and whole-loan desks tracking mREIT appetite for product; cap-markets teams targeting commercial mREITs (BXMT / STWD) for CRE loan sales; researchers following the mortgage REIT sector; competitive-intelligence work on non-bank end holders.
What’s NOT in scope: SEC 10-K/10-Q disclose aggregate portfolio composition, not CUSIP-level or loan-level detail. We don’t see individual positions, counterparty-level acquisitions, or sub-coupon-band composition unless the filer voluntarily tags those sub-metrics in XBRL (most don’t). Private managers like Bayview and KKR don’t file 10-K and aren’t in this panel — their activity is visible only through sponsored securitizations in the forthcoming RMBS Deal Directory.
